SUMMARY:MobileWorlds Festival - Online
DESCRIPTION:The Online edition of the MobileWorlds Festival was held on 10 and 11 October 2025 (Friday 10.00-17.00 CET and Saturday 10.30-16.00 CET). The Saturday program included a walking workshop and discussion\, and was meant as a social and relaxed set of activities\, so it will hopefully be a fun weekend activity\, rather than feel like work. If you will spend the Saturday with family\, do consider bringing them along on the walking workshop! We are including this Saturday program to make sure people can participate who cannot incorporate this program into their working hours. \nMore information about the festival as a whole can be found on the dedicated page. \nAs the Festival has ended\, registration is now closed. \n\n← Tilbake Takk for din tilbakemelding. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(nødvendig)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(nødvendig)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Send inn \n \n \n \nΔ

SUMMARY:RGS Online - MobileWorlds will have a double special session and one presentation
DESCRIPTION:This year at the Royal Geographical Society’s annual conference\, MobileWorlds organized a double special session entitled “Third Cultures of Mobility: Exploring and stimulating alternative mobility futures and research methodologies“. The sessions also included a presentation by Kim\, entitled “Mobilities in Times of Crisis: Seeking Third Cultures of Mobility Through Creative Participatory Methods”\, and a presentation by Wendy\, entitled “Talking the Talk\, Walking the Walk: Auto-ethnographic Reflections on Multicultural Terms of Mobility.” Other presentations will be held by Peter Norton\, Stefanos Tsigdinos\, António Ferreira\, Enrica Papa\, Hannah Hook\, Joyce David\, Dario Stolze\, Thomas Klinger\, and Sonja Haustein. \nBelow you can find the summary of the theme of the sessions and the program of short presentations that are included in each session. The sessions are organised in such a way that they should allow plenty of room for discussion of the sessions’ theme. Further details to be found via the conference’s own program (see the links for session 1 and session 2). \nRGS Online Special Session: Third Cultures of Mobility: Exploring and stimulating alternative mobility futures and research methodologies \nOrganisers: Kim Carlotta von Schönfeld and Wendy Tan \n\n\n\nAccording to David Graeber\, “the ultimate truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently” (Graeber\, 2024). (Hyper)-Mobilities and other mechanisms of globalization\, however\, seem to imply that it has become increasingly difficult to perceive ways to make things differently\, despite (or because of?) intensive contact among countless cultures around the globe. The question then is\, how can creative and diverse alternatives for mobilities be stimulated in this context? This session explores possibilities in this regard\, with some more classical\, some more radical presentations of non-mainstream (usually non-car-based) mobility cultures\, and methods of how these can be explored. The session discussion explores in depth how the proposals presented can be connected\, for instance through the conceputalisation of “Third cultures of mobility”. The latter refer to cultural interweavings that emerge when various cultures interact in significant ways. What might “Third Cultures of Mobility” look like\, and how might they contribute to more or less openness to change in regards to the futures of mobilities (or immobilities)? Within the context of turbulent global times\, and polycrises to which some contemporary mobility practices contribute to a very high extent (through CO2 emissions\, as well as by other dynamics\, such as lack of local engagement and superficialisation of human relations)\, other contemporary mobility practices provide important solutions (e.g. minimising mobility\, or shaping or enacting it differently\, using it to deepen both local engagement and human relations\, and questioning the need for streamlined\, speed-based mobility). After all\, perhaps it is not only how much we move\, but (also) about how we move. \nNot only cultural creativity\, but also questions of communication/vocabularies\, and methodological creativity when studying and/or encouraging cultural diversity can be key when exploring “Third Cultures of Mobility”. Arts-based workshops and mobile interviewing have been used to trigger cultural reflection and interaction (see e.g. https://mobileworlds.online)\, but many other creative methods and methodologies have been emerging. \nThis set of two special sessions provides a platform for discussion creative ways of dealing with cultural diversity and diverse methodologies in mobilities research\, including but not limited to: \n\nculturally diverse practices and/or planning for future mobilities\ncultural diversity in (im-)mobility planning and/or practices\nalternative methodologies for studying (im-)mobility planning and/or practices\ntheoretical reflections on cultural diversity and “thinking otherwise” (preferably withan angle towards mobilities research)\ncross-cultural communication / vocabularies of mobility\n\nThe sessions consist of short presentations\, leaving a larger amount of time for discussion at the end\, to connect the topics covered in view of “Third Cultures of Mobility” and creative ways forward for mobilities research and practice. Both sessions include a combination of more conceptual and more methodological ambitions\, empirical findings and proposals for application. \nReference: Graeber\, David. SUMMARY:The Future Design of Streets Conference - MobileWorlds will present
DESCRIPTION:The Future Design of Streets Conference will take place in Guimarães\, Portugal in June! MobileWorlds is happy to be included in the programme to present some of our work. \nThis is the abstract accepted for the Conference: \n  \n“Third Cultures” for Sustainable and Just Mobilities: Questioning the Origins\, Uses and Futures of Streets \nCultures – be they national\, regional\, local\, or subcultural – have been increasingly mobile over the past decades. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic\, cultures continued to mix and merge to exceptional degrees. It is not that cultural diversity is new\, historically\, yet its intensity and impact on daily lives of people of all ages\, societal groups and diverse geographies seems to have increased. At the same time\, cultural globalization processes\, at least on the surface\, also seem to have brought about a certain homogenization of practices and imaginaries. Climate change\, war\, biodiversity loss\, social polarization\, pollution\, persistent social inequalities\, and more such devastating circumstances\, have led many to speak of “polycrisis” when describing the state of the world. Mobility sits squarely at the heart of much of what can drive or hinder the polycrisis from unfolding further. What might a closer look at culturally diverse norms and values reveal about potential future practices and imaginaries of sustainable and just mobility? What potentials and pitfalls does it bring with it? This contribution looks at streets as examples of ways that cultural diversity expresses itself spatially and in relation to mobility. Based on a historical and literature review of the origins\, uses and imaginaries of streets\, as well as three expert interviews\, and a search through songs and the music scene\, and literary quotes\, the contribution identifies seven themes around which streets have been and can be understood. Finally\, the concept of “Third Cultures” is proposed as a way to explore thinking otherwise towards avenues for creative\, locally meaningful possibilities by which streets can contribute to locally relevant\, just\, and sustainable mobility practices. \n

SUMMARY:ISEE Degrowth - Kim will speak at roundtable on planning\, degrowth\, and anti-colonial change
DESCRIPTION:Individual practices are important\, but much more systemic change is needed for historically rooted and economically-justified social and environmental injustices and extractions to be truly addressed. The intertwined topics of planning\, degrowth\, and anti-colonial change are key “places” where this can and must be done. This will also have implications for how mobilities are practiced and planned in the future\, and which mobility cultures are embraced\, what this will look like\, and who will be making decisions\, etc. Some of my previous work has discussed alternative mobility values under part of this lens (e.g. Mobility values article\, and Chapter on Clumsy Mobility Solutions in Post-Growth Planning Book) and the work for MobileWorlds is also preoccupied with the greater implications of changing mobility cultures\, be it through individual shifts in perspectives\, but also through shifts in planning practices\, perceptions\, imaginaries and cultures. Last but not least\, Kim’s experiences crossing Global North and Global South contexts in both work and personal lives provides additional insight for the anti-colonial discussion\, which she is personally passionate about. \nTo further develop and discuss some of these ideas\, Kim will be a speaker at a hybrid special session of the combined 18th Conference of the International Society for Ecological Economics and 11th International Degrowth Conference. The session is entitled “Radical Planning and the path to Degrowth: Mobilising Urban Planners for an Anti-Colonial Transition” and organized by Karen Waneska de Jesus and Jin Xue (both from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences – NMBU
).\n \n

SUMMARY:All-Ages Workshop Matosinhos/Porto – 9 November - morning
DESCRIPTION:*free* *registration required* \nHow do you make your daily trip to school or work? What mode of transport is your favourite\, and why? How do you wish this could be different in the future? This workshop takes a hands-on\, creative approach to explore mobility practices through the lens of culture – based on a set of norms and values that we identify with\, for instance based on nationality\, region\, or subgroup (e.g. environmentalist\, academic\, skater\, etc.). It begins with an introspective\, individual part (which can remain private)\, and then moves on to a group creation and discussion about various cultures coming together within individuals and between individuals and groups. The workshop uses drawing\, collage\, plasticine\, and other such methods to stimulate out-of-the-box engagement with the topic. The workshop is part of a series of such events carried out for the Mobile Worlds project and adjusted for diverse age-groups and backgrounds. See https://mobileworlds.online for more information. \nThe workshop will be facilitated in English\, but group discussions may also be had in any other language\, if preferred. It will take place on 9 November 2024\, in Matosinhos\, near Brito Capelo Metro station – details shared upon registration. Child-friendly snacks\, coffee\, tea and juice will be provided. \nPlease sign up via Eventbrite\, here. Make sure to select the correct date and number of participants. We look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:Planners Workshop Bergen - 16 October 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Mobile Worlds Workshop for Planners is similar to the all-ages workshop\, but the discussion part focuses a little more on immediate and possible long-term take-aways for the planners’ work. The workshop takes a hands-on\, creative approach to explore mobility practices through the lens of culture – based on a set of norms and values that we identify with\, for instance based on nationality\, region\, or subgroup (e.g. environmentalist\, academic\, skater\, etc.). It begins with an introspective\, individual part (which can remain private)\, and then moves on to a group creation and discussion about various cultures coming together within individuals and between individuals and groups\, and looking for take-aways for the context of planners. \nThe workshop uses drawing\, collage\, plasticine\, and other such methods to stimulate out-of-the-box engagement with the topic. The workshop is part of a series of such events carried out for the Mobile Worlds project and adjusted for diverse age-groups and backgrounds. See https://mobileworlds.online for more information. \nDuring the workshop\, planners will be able to: \n\nPlayfully engage with your own mobility experiences\nPlayfully and reflectively engage with what are ideal future mobilities\nHave a rare moment for introspection\nHave time to reflect on challenges and possibilities with your colleagues\n\nFrom the workshop planners will take away\, at least: \n\nA toolkit of new engagement skills\nA refreshed perspective on inclusive and sustainable planning\nA strengthened network with your colleagues for addressing these issues\n\nThe workshop will be facilitated in English and Norwegian\, but group discussions may also be had in Norwegian\, if preferred. SUMMARY:All-Ages Workshop Bergen – 15 October 2024
DESCRIPTION:*free* *registration required* \nWhat mode of transport do you prioritize\, and why? How far do you think is too far to walk? How do you wish this could be different in the future? From what age should a child be able to travel from home to school on their own? \nThe workshop will be facilitated in English and Norwegian\, but group discussions may also be had in Norwegian\, if preferred. It will take place on 15 October from 15.30-17.30\, at the HVL Kronstad Campus\, in the Global Lounge. Snacks\, coffee and tea will be provided. \nPlease sign up via Eventbrite\, here. Make sure to select the correct date and number of participants. We look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:Presentation on "Thinking Otherwise" at Pontevedra Degrowth Conference
DESCRIPTION:On 21 June I’ll be presenting on the idea of “Thinking Otherwise” in academia and beyond\, during a session called “Challenging dominant values\, ideologies\, and imaginaries” of the 10th International Degrowth Conference\, this year in Pontevedra\, Spain. \nWe’ll share a bit about how Thinking Otherwise is discussed in two books: “Postcolonial Theory: An Introduction” by Leela Gandhi (second edition)\, and “Ways of Being. Animals\, Plants\, Machines: The Search for a Planetary Intelligence” by James Bridle. We zoom in especially to the questions of categorization in binaries and generalization as key objectives of academic research\, why it might be interesting to transcend these objectives\, and hints to how we might do so. The Mobile Worlds workshops done so far and the idea behind them serves as inspiration here as well. \nI hope to see you there\, and am happy as always to discuss and think alongside others!

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Role of Academia in Initiating / Enabling Change
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a series of “Planning Dialogues” exploring “change” in planning. This event will be a debate on the impact of activism done by planning researchers\, and on the role of academia in political developments\, such as recent turns to right-wing voting around the world\, and how these themes might be related. This theme explores the pros and cons of normative research and practice through academia\, action research\, and related processes. It also looks into how such positioning of academia is related to political projects such as those of the European Union\, especially in the areas of\, for instance\, “innovation” and “participation”\, and to right wing political shifts. \nFor this debate\, we have invited: \nErsilia Verlinghieri\, Senior Research Fellow at the Active Travel Academy\, University of Westminster and a Senior Researcher in Urban Mobility at the Transport Studies Unit\, University of Oxford. Since 2012\, her work focuses on developing theoretical and methodological approaches to issues of social and environmental justice in transport. Her research has a specific focus on participatory planning and research methodologies and in analysing the contribution of grassroots actors in reshaping transport policy and planning. Between 2016 – 2020 she was also the Coordinator of the Global Challenges in Transport Programme\, which brings together practitioners\, campaigners\, and academics to discuss the future of transport. + info: Ersilia’s Westminster University profile \nWendy Tan\, Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences\, at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences in Bergen\, Norway\, and Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Landscape Architecture and Planning chair at Wageningen University\, The Nethlerands\, brings a decade of experience as an architect\, urban designer\, researcher and planner in Europe and Asia to the discussion. + info: Wendy’s HVL profile \nAntónio Ferreira\, Associate Research Professor at CITTA – Centre for Research on Territory\, Transports and Environment of the University of Porto\, Portugal. António has worked in a number of countries and universities across Europe. He is an eclectic and versatile researcher with great curiosity for new topics and who has published on a variety of fields\, ranging from urban and transport governance to planning education\, from emotions in the workplace to mindfulness\, from planning theory to economic appraisal. At the moment\, his key research interests are focused on child-friendly futures and post-growth planning\, the governance of the digital transition and of “smart” cities. António is also a Yoga and Meditation teacher and Personal Trainer and actively uses insights from these embodied disciplines to inspire his work. + info: António’s CITTA profile \nMiloš N. Mladenović\, Associate Professor at the Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering Group\, Department of Built Environment\, School of Engineering of Aalto niversity\, Finland. His current research interests include the interplay of society and emerging mobility technologies\, as well as development of decision-support methods and planning processes. + info: Miloš’s Aalto profile \nThe event is organised by: \nSusa Eräranta is a Professor of Practice at Aalto University\, Finland\, and works simultaneously in practice. She has a background in urban planning\, sustainability and organizational sciences. Her research interests are in exploring the complex dynamics of diverse living beings in the practices\, processes and networks of planning. + info: LinkedIn \nand \nKim Carlotta von Schönfeld\, MSCA-post-doctoral research fellow at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)\, in Bergen\, Norway\, and collaborating member of the Centre for Research on Transport\, Territory and Environment at the University of Porto. Her research interests include Planning\, Governance\, Sustainability\, Mobility\, and Public Space\, especially with an international perspective. She is especially interested in links to socio-economic history\, development and philosophy\, in the search for socially as well as economically sustainable worldwide change (see e.g. ‘degrowth’). In doing so\, she attempts to create interaction between academic and artistic worlds (e.g. film\, literature and photography\, among others). + info: LinkedIn \n  \nPlease sign up via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Webinar: Questioning (Mental) Comfort in Planning
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of a series of “Planning Dialogues” exploring “change” in planning. This event will be a debate on how the ideal of comfort affects the realm of thinking\, how much this has to do with physical comfort\, and how much it affects a willingness to change\, or not to chane – both outside and inside our minds. Is there a tendency to stay in our comfort zones even when thinking? We explore this\, as usual\, within the field of planning – a field that in this case has some power to determine the extent to which it makes comfort a priority\, or not. \nFor the debate\, we have invited: \nWendy Tan\, Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences\, at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences in Bergen\, Norway\, and Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Landscape Architecture and Planning chair at Wageningen University\, The Nethlerands\, brings a decade of experience as an architect\, urban designer\, researcher and planner in Europe and Asia to the discussion. + info: Wendy’s HVL profile \nAntónio Ferreira\, Associate Research Professor at CITTA – Centre for Research on Territory\, Transports and Environment of the University of Porto\, Portugal. He is the Programme Leader for the MSc in Sustainable Planning. John has had a varied career as a planner in both practice and academia\, and is keen to bring both areas closer together. He tries to work across disciplinary boundaries\, with the ultimate aim of improving people’s lives by contributing to planning and development policy and practice. He is particularly interested in how cities grow in more “sustainable” ways\, with an understanding of sustainability that considers all those involved\, including those with less power and influence in the planning and development systems. + info: John’s University of Hertfordshire profile \nSofia Wiberg\, a researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Stockholm\, Sweden. She is interested in knowledge formation\, collective work and decision making processes\, asymmetric power relations and the limits of knowing. SUMMARY:Webinar: Combining “science” and “art” in planning (?)
DESCRIPTION:This event will be a debate on the extent to which academic work (labelled as “scientific”) should engage more in artistic methodologies\, artistic output\, artistic engagement of audiences or artistic philosophies\, and other alternative approaches\, and do these relate to the idea of “scientism”. An important underlying assumption is that artistic methods might be more creative and therefore incentivise change – however\, this is an untested hypothesis as far as we are aware. We will discuss how art can be used as a process for engaging diverse publics in planning\, what art even means in such a context\, what its role for inducing ‘change’ is\, and how far-reaching the role of art in planning can and should be. \nFor the debate\, we have invited: \nSofia Wiberg\, a researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Stockholm\, Sweden. She is interested in knowledge formation\, collective work and decision making processes\, asymmetric power relations and the limits of knowing. She has conducted research on transdisciplinary approaches to planning\, including the arts\, and how these are used during co-creation. + info: Sofia Wiberg’s KTH profile \nMarcos L. He conducts research\, teaching and design\, with a focus on collaborative work\, the editing of existing structures and the redevelopment of existing structures and situations\, often in creative and collaborative ways. + info: Marcos L. Rosa’s website \nSofia Greaves is a researcher and freelance artist. She currently works as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Vigo\, Spain. Her current research explores ways in which art and science collaborations can encourage more holistic policy making and knowledge production within scientific institutions. SUMMARY:mobil.TUM presentation: Transcending the duality of the “mobile” and “immobile”. Revealing human capacities for planetary wellbeing through “third cultures”
DESCRIPTION:The mobil.TUM conference 2024: The Future of Mobility and Urban Space will take place from 10-12 April in Munich\, Germany. I will be presenting on the first day of the Conference\, the 10th of April\, with the presentation entitled “Transcending the duality of the “mobile” and “immobile”. Revealing human capacities for planetary wellbeing through “third cultures”.” The presentation will focus mostly on the conceptual and methodological insights Mobile Worlds has thus far developed\, and share some very preliminary insights from first workshops and interviews. If you can\, I heartily recommend joining the conference\, and I look forward to learning from the keynote speakers and other presenters as well!

SUMMARY:Planners' Workshop 1 - Bergen
DESCRIPTION:As part of a course at HVL in Bergen\, we held a Mobile Worlds workshop with planners\, to explore their third cultures\, and the implications that thinking in terms of cultural diversity could have for their work. It was a large workshop (27 planners) and very fun and creative. The focus was really on thinking out-of-the-box\, rather than coming up with feasible alternative planning\, but this made it especially inspiring for us as researchers\, and it was hopefully an engaging experience for the participants. Thank you to all who took part!

SUMMARY:Seminar “(Transition) Experiments\, Innovation\, and ‘Thinking Otherwise’”
DESCRIPTION:Experimentation and innovation are ideas – and buzzwords – that are increasingly capturing attention in both research and planning/policy practice. This has perhaps been going on for a decade or more\, but interest seems to grow continuously\, perhaps with experimentation gaining more traction\, while innovation is receiving slightly more nuanced treatment. These ideas tend to aim for the encouragement of sustainability transitions\, or other forms of transformation towards more environmentally and socially just futures. This seminar will zoom in on these two concepts from an explicitly critical perspective\, suggesting that\, while both concepts can be highly revealing when studied academically\, both of them can also have very problematic consequences if applied as policies or planning directives. The seminar then uses this critical perspective to explore the idea of ‘thinking otherwise’\, the challenges and potentials this provides\, and possible ways forward. Research findings on innovation\, experimentation and ‘third cultures’ will be shared\, including methodological reflections from the ongoing Mobile Worlds project. See https://mobileworlds.online for more information. \nThe seminar will be preceded by a Mini-Workshop. Please see Events page for more information and registration. \nPlease feel free to simply show up to the seminar. SUMMARY:Mini Workshop - HVL
DESCRIPTION:What mode of transport do you prioritize\, and why? How far do you think is too far to walk? From what age should a child be able to travel from home to school on their own? \nThe workshop will be facilitated in English\, but group discussions may also be had in Norwegian\, if preferred. It will take place on 4 April from 11-12\, at the HVL Kronstad Campus\, room F204. Snacks\, coffee and tea will be provided\, and participants are invited to bring lunch to have during the workshop if they like. The workshop will be followed by a seminar on “(Transition) Experiments\, Innovation\, and ‘Thinking Otherwise’” in the same room. \nPlease RSVP by 29 March (extended to 3 april\, though there are only few spots left!) by email to mobileworlds@hvl.no or by filling out the form below: \n\n← Tilbake Takk for din tilbakemelding. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(nødvendig)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(nødvendig)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Send inn \n \n \n \nΔ
