Without being able here to share an exhaustive list, I had the pleasure of discovering the Makerworld Film, reflections on the changing roles of postal offices in the Alps (Borys Cieslak), critical perspectives on renting and subletting in Berlin (Leah Aaron), and many more. It was a great networking experience as well, and I dare say I made some new friends. Thanks to the organizers for a great conference!

In my own presentation I was able to share some details about my theoretical framing for MobileWorlds, and some preliminary results from the workshops and survey. The presentation title and abstract are shared below.

” “Third Cultures” for Sustainable and Just Regions: Reconciling unity and diversity”

Abstract:

The intensity and individual experience of difference has grown alongside the exponential growth of hypermobility among people, goods and services. Through globalisation and digitalisation this has reached the daily experience of people of all ages and societal groups. At the same time, cultural globalization processes, at least on the surface, also seem to have brought about a certain homogenization of practices and imaginaries. As the polycrisis unfolds around the world, including social polarization and a crisis of imagination regarding possible solutions at relevant levels (e.g. regional or local, rather than global), it is clear that the tension between unity and diversity in relation to socio-cultural values and actions must be addressed. This presentation asks what a closer look at cultural intertwining at individual, local, and regional levels can reveal about potentials and challenges for future practices and imaginaries of sustainable and just regions. It explores the concept of “Third Cultures” to propose avenues for creative, regionally meaningful alternatives for achieving regionally relevant, just, and sustainable practices. This is applied especially to mobility practices, though the findings are relevant also for other fields. A review of the academic and non-academic literature on the concept of “Third Cultures”, as well as empirical results from interviews and co-creative workshops conducted in Portugal and Norway in 2024 and 2025, are presented, and implications for sustainable and just regions are discussed.

Here’s a peak into the slides on the more theoretical side I shared during the presentation (wait a few seconds and you’ll see the slides passing 😉 ):

Stay tuned for more news about the results of the project, and do register for the MobileWorlds Festival this fall!

In early May 2025 I had the pleasure to participate at the Regional Studies Association’s Annual Conference, this year in Porto, Portugal.
