The MobileWorlds Toolbox

Planning is a field of much power, and much discontent, because it involves change. For both planners and citizens at large, it is often hard to imagine or engage with change in a positive manner. Especially in uncertain times environmentally and politically, in which much of what has been taken for granted over several decades is being questioned, threatening many people’s sense of security and comfort.

Yet the ability to imagine and engage with change is a powerful one, and one with the potential to provide security, and comfort, into the future. So (re-)gaining a sense of agency and the capacity to imagine what the future should and could look like, can aid in both immediate and long-term well-being. Therefore, the MobileWorlds project has been studying how people can exit their usual boxes of thinking, namely in relation to the flexibility of cultures of mobilities – uncovering so-called “Third Cultures” which people develop as they come into contact with various norms and values around them, expressed in ways of being and acting. In the process, the MobileWorlds project developed a toolbox to aid in shaping planning in a way that engages people and releases their imaginaries, in inclusive and diverse ways. This book provides an overview of the toolkit, which is also available in an interactive format on the MobileWorlds project website.

In this Toolbox you will find:

  1. The MobileWorlds Workshop Toolkit – with specific information for the all-ages, planners, and academics audiences.
  2. The Mobile Interview Toolkit
  3. The MobileWorlds Spatial Analysis Toolkit
  4. The MobileWorlds Festival Toolkit

Each of these Toolkits is designed with both researchers and practitioners in mind. Though each toolkit includes some specific questions, they all include at least the following parts:

    • Objectives / Applicability
    • Key questions addressed
    • Materials / Spatial conditions
    • Key steps
    • Key actors to consider
    • Key timings to consider
    • Tips and Tricks
    • Examples for inspiration

The Toolkits are framed specifically within the subject of the MobileWorlds project, but can also serve as inspiration and for setting up similar activities on other subjects.

Finally, we also include a brief overview of Benefits and Drawbacks of Creative Research & Practice.

You can find all the details for each toolkit on its own page by clicking the respective links, or an overview of the toolbox’s key elements and insights in the pdf below:
