Third Cultures in a lecture on sustainable mobility research

On 4 September 2023, Kim gave a lecture at Wendy’s sustainable mobility masters course at HVL, and besides discussing the value of going beyond expert-oriented work by looking at everyday anecdotes (see the academic paper on this here), she introduced the concept of third cultures as a potential trigger to think “otherwise” about sustainable mobility.

Together, we discussed different ways cultures and sub-cultures manifest, and shared experiences from Norway, Sweden, Portugal and Singapore, among others. Differences between the Norwegian urban and rural contexts for example also came up. Questions on how “third cultures” based on “TCK” experiences (see concepts page) are really different from cultures emerging based on migration emerged – a key question to be developed as part of the Mobile Worlds project.
