Polycrisis Challenging the Sociological Imagination: inspiring moments from the ISUP summer school in June 2024

In June, Mobile Worlds took part in the ISUP Summer school at the Sociology Department of the University of Porto, in Portugal. The title was “Polycrisis Challenging the Sociological Imagination“. It was both a super inspiring and perhaps somewhat devastating summer school, highlighting so many aspects of the Polycrisis, but also providing hope for ways we might take steps to surmount it, or at least to be within it and contribute our piece to making things a little better rather than worse. Topics ranged from housing, to health, to education and more, with at least three inspiring speakers invited on each topic.

One of the highlights for me was of course the workshop, in which we built (drew) an ideal city, and the process and result (see one such result in the picture of a drawn city in the photo gallery) both were fascinating – even though the group had to work with much less time than they would usually have for these workshops.

Another highlight was a soundwalk we did, during which we passed by gorgeous (and some mostly noisy and less beautiful) places in the city of Porto; and the theatre improvisation exercise we did, which was so inspiring.

The photo gallery provides a few glimpses into what the summer schools was like:

Many thanks to the summer school organisers and to the participants who also helped bring life into the experience!
